The Chevrolet Aveo5 gets restyled as a hatchback model for the 2009 model year, and now offers standard OnStar assistance at MSRP $12,120. For 2009, the Aveo is equipped with a new 1.6-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine, which delivers 106 horsepower and 107 pounds-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic, offers "hold-control" mode for use under slippery road conditions. Improvements to the four-cylinder engine improve mileage to 27/34 mpg city/highway with the manual and 25/34 mpg with the four-speed automatic.

The Aveo5 hatchback gets a unique large rectangular grille split by a body-colored band carrying the signature Chevy bowtie. In profile the car resembles its predecessor; new clear lens taillights bring up the rear. The car is available with XM radio and auxiliary input jack. The cabin features AM/FM stereo with auxiliary audio input jack and four speakers, tilt steering column, driver armrest, driver seat manual height and lumbar adjuster, variable-speed intermittent wipers,tinted glass, composite halogen headlamps, compact spare tire, front bucket seats and a three-place rear bench, making room for up to five people. Cargo room is 7 cubic feet, but the rear seat splits 60/40 allowing for cargo room of 42 cubic feet. Air conditioning is standard on both LT trims.

The 2009 Chevrolet Aveo5 earned a 5-Star frontal crash test rating. Safety features include 3 point safety belts, a tire pressure monitor, dual stage frontal and side impact airbags, and driver and front passenger airbags, with passenger sensing system.
